The Napa Valley Unified School District board of trustees voted unanimously Thursday night to change the name and image of the mascot at one school and the image of the mascot at another.
The board voted to retire Napa High School’s Indian mascot on June 30, identify a new mascot by Feb. 1, 2019 and adopt the new mascot by June 30, 2021.
The changes will be phased in due to the cost of replacing the Indian mascot on athletic and band uniforms, murals and the gym floor.
The trustees also voted 7-0 in favor of keeping Redwood Middle School’s mascot the Warriors, but changing its image by June 30, 2021.
The changes are being made because the Indian mascot and the imagery associated with the word warrior do not promote dignity and respect. The trustees said mascots should reflect the respect for human rights, equality, non-discrimination, good governance and good faith.
Some trustees expressed mixed feelings about the changes during the three-hour discussion.
