An allegedly armed man who was shot by San Francisco police officers Wednesday afternoon in the city’s Excelsior neighborhood died later that evening at a hospital, according to San Francisco police.
He’s been identified as 21-year-old Suisun City resident Jehad Eid, the medical examiner’s office confirmed.
Eid was allegedly involved in a shootout with police in which an officer was injured as well as four other people, including a minor, police said.
The incident began around 4:30 p.m. when officers responded to a report of a man with a gun near the 200 block of Amazon Avenue.
According to police, officers then confronted several people inside a business on the nearby corner of Geneva Avenue and London Street and gunfire was exchanged, injuring the six people.
The officer was taken to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital where he was reported to be in fair condition.
Eid was also taken to the hospital, but despite life-saving efforts he died a short while later, police said.
The condition of the minor who was shot was not released.
The other three victims are all men. One suffered life-threatening injuries while the two others are in fair condition.
Police have not revealed exactly how the shooting unfolded since the investigation is in the early stages. Investigations are being conducted by the department’s Homicide Detail, the District Attorney’s Independent Investigations Bureau, the Department of Police Accountability, the police Internal Affairs Division and the city’s medical examiner’s office.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Police Department’s 24-hour tip line at (415) 575-4444 or text a tip to TIP411 and start the message with SFPD. Tipsters have the option to remain anonymous.
A town hall meeting is expected to take place within 10 days to provide more information about the shooting.
