Vallejo firefighters say they are working forced overtime — up to 100 hours in a row — due to shortage of staff and a high volume of calls.
The department extinguished a three-alarm fire at about 5 a.m. Sunday, and said in a Facebook post that “fatigued firefighters” responded to the blaze at 110 Corporate Place.
Firefighters said Saturday’s fire is a “looming reminder” that their department is unable to hire enough personnel to serve Vallejo’s citizens.
Only three new recruits are currently training to become firefighters, leaving nine positions vacant, according to the department.
In the post, Vallejo firefighters said “long outstanding contract issues” are hindering the department.”
