A man with a rifle is holding three people hostage and has exchanged gunfire with Napa County Sheriff’s deputies in a room at the Veterans Home in Yountville, authorities said Friday.
California Highway Patrol Officer Chris Child said no injuries have been reported and three SWAT teams have responded to the incident that began around 10:30 a.m. at the Veterans Home at 260 California Drive.
The Napa County Sheriff’s Office knows who the man is and has called him on his cell phone but he has not responded, Napa County Sheriff John Robertson said.
“We don’t know his motivation,” Robertson said at a news conference this afternoon. Authorities also do not know the hostages’ conditions, he said.
The man held several people hostage and released all but three of them, Robertson said. The remaining hostages are employees of the Pathway Home, CHP Officer Child said.
Access to the Veterans Home area is restricted and the public is asked to stay away. A hotline has been established for people who may have loved ones in the Veterans Home. The number is (707) 948-3331.
