SF woman and son killed in ski resort accident

A San Francisco woman and her 7-year-old son were tragically killed outside a condominium at the Kirkwood Mountain ski resort in Alpine County after being trapped under three feet of snow as it fell off a roof Sunday evening.

Olga Perkovic and Aaron Goodstein were reported missing around 6:40 p.m. Search crews responded along with firefighters, resort security and the ski patrol.

Investigators determined that they had last boarded chair lift No. 7 around 4 p.m.

Then around 9 p.m., a neighbor found their ski gloves in the snow and realized that the victims had been buried underneath.

Perkovic and Aaron were unconscious when rescuers dug them out.

They were transported to hospitals but neither survived.

Investigators believe the pair decided to return to their condo via an alternate route and skied underneath a roof covered with snow when it slid off and buried them.

Tuesday afternoon Alpine County Undersheriff Spencer Case said:

“It’s just a horrible accident. That’s the way I see it. It’s one of those events of nature.”

Case said:

“They were just in the wrong spot — that’s all I can say about it.”

The victims were on a family trip with two of Aaron’s siblings as well as Perkovic’s mother. Case also offered his condolences to Perkovic’s husband.

Josh Hoffman, CEO of Emeryville-based biotech firm Zymergen, called Perkovic a valued employee, a trusted advisor and:

” … most importantly, an old and close friend of mine and so many others. Words can’t express how shocked we were to hear this news. She will be missed by all of us.”
