San Francisco firefighters extinguished a debris fire that broke out underneath the lower deck of the western span of the Bay Bridge Tuesday afternoon, according to fire officials.

CHP officials announced the fire at 2:44 p.m. It broke out under the bridge, about a quarter-mile west of the Yerba Buena Island exit and all eastbound traffic was temporarily blocked.

A fireboat responded and extinguished the blaze by 3 p.m. The exact cause of the fire is under investigation, fire officials said.

An unrelated vehicle collision occurred nearby shortly after 2 p.m. The collision and a medical emergency occurred on the eastbound Treasure Island exit and temporarily blocked eastbound traffic, CHP officials said.
