A Fairfield police detective who shot at a man during a foot pursuit Wednesday did so because he saw the man reaching for a gun, police said Thursday.
The officer-involved shooting, which occurred around 3:40 p.m. on Crowley Lane, left the man in critical condition. He has been identified as 22-year-old Christian Reyes.
Police have also identified the officer who shot Reyes as Fairfield police Detective Robert Murray.
Murray was working with a Solano County sheriff’s deputy at the time as the pair had been assigned to the Solano County Special Enforcement Team.
While on patrol, they spotted Reyes and attempted to make a pedestrian stop, but Reyes fled on foot and a brief foot chase ensued on Crowley Lane.
During the pursuit, Murray saw Reyes reaching for his waistband for a gun and Murray shot at him several times, striking his upper body, police said.
Reyes remains in critical condition, police said Thursday.
Immediately after the shooting, a replica firearm was recovered from Reyes’ waistband, according to police.
The officer-involved shooting remains under investigation and Fairfield police are asking anyone who may have witnessed it or who may have more information to call them at (707) 428-7300.
