On Saturday night, San Francisco police identified a suspect in a shooting Friday evening that killed one man and injured another near Golden Gate Park’s Panhandle area.
Joel Armstrong, 31, a transient in San Francisco allegedly killed a 28-year-old San Francisco man and left a 35-year-old San Francisco man with life-threatening injuries.
On Friday at 6:28 p.m., police responded to Oak and Stanyan streets on a report of a shooting.
Responding officers allegedly located two victims suffering from gunshot wounds.
Police said it appears there was an argument among a group of people when Armstrong allegedly shot the two men.
Armstrong allegedly ran to Fell Street, used the gun to carjack a vehicle and got away.
This morning at 12:13 a.m., officers allegedly located the stolen vehicle on Alameda Street near De Haro Street.
The vehicle was unoccupied, but it was parked behind a recreational vehicle that was occupied, police said.
Officers made contact with the occupants and several people exited the vehicle, but Armstrong allegedly remained inside.
Officers allege they made contact with Armstrong and an officer-involved shooting occurred.
Police established a perimeter around the vehicle, and a tactical unit and crisis/hostage negotiation team responded.
At about 2:20 a.m., Armstrong allegedly exited the vehicle, was taken into custody and transported to the hospital for an evaluation.
No injuries were reported in the officer-involved shooting, police said.
The Police Department will hold a town hall meeting in the coming days regarding the officer-involved shooting.
The incident is being investigated by the Police Department’s homicide detail, the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office, the Department of Police Accountability and the Police Department’s internal affairs unit.
