SFO flight lands safely in Honolulu after engine cover comes off

A plane that took off from San Francisco International Airport this morning safely made an emergency landing in Honolulu, its destination, after the engine cover came off, airline officials said.

After taking off at 9 a.m., United Flight 1175 called for an emergency landing because of a loss of the engine cowling, which covers the engine, according to United Airlines officials.

The plane landed safely in Honolulu on Runway 8R around 12:40 p.m. Honolulu time, Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said.

The pilots followed all necessary protocols to safely land the aircraft, a Boeing 777, and passengers deplaned successfully.

The FAA will investigate the incident, according to Gregor.
