Reuben Foster arrested on domestic violence charges

49ers starting linebacker Reuben Foster was booked on charges relating to domestic violence at the Santa Clara County Jail Sunday.

According to a report from the San Francisco Chronicle, Foster, 23, was arrested by the Los Gatos Police Department and was initially held without bond. Current court records, however, show that Foster has posted bail at $75,000 and has since been released from custody.

In a statement from the 49ers, per Jennifer Chan of SB Nation, the team says they are “aware” of Foster’s arrest gathering information regarding the incident:

For Foster, this incident marks his second arrest in less than a month,  as the former first-round pick was taken into custody on Jan. 12 in Tuscaloosa, Ala. for second degree marijuana possession.

Unfortunately for the 49ers, this is not their first time dealing with players being arrested for domestic violence. Early last offseason, felony charges were filed against former San Francisco cornerback Tramaine Brock after he was accused of trying to strangle his girlfriend while she was holding their 1-year-old child.

Brock was subsequently cut from the team less than 24 hours after his arrest.

Recently, the NFL has made it a priority to eradicate domestic violence from the league. In doing so, the league office has implemented an automatic six-game suspension for any player arrested for charges related to domestic violence.

Foster and the 49ers organization are still waiting on word from the league concerning discipline for his initial arrest after being placed in the NFL’s substance abuse program following the submission of a diluted urine sample at the NFL Combine in 2017.

Now with two potential suspensions looming over Foster, the 49ers may be left with a difficult decision on whether to keep the former Alabama star on their roster.

In his rookie season, Foster ranked second on the team in tackles (72) and was named Rookie of the Month in November. Despite missing five games due to a high ankle sprain in the early stages of last season, Foster proved to be an integral piece to the rebuilding blueprint for the 49ers.

As the legal problems pile up for Foster, his place in the organization’s future may be up in the air.
