Teen connected to fatal San Jose shooting

The 17-year-old arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a man in San Jose on Tuesday morning will remain in Santa Clara County Juvenile Hall while his case is pending.

Judge Katherine Lucero presided over the detention hearing for the teen, who has been identified by prosecutors only as Angel M.

After hearing the request of his assigned attorney, Lana Kreidie, to allow the defendant to be released from custody, Lucero announced that he would stay in juvenile hall for the sake of public safety and due to the services available there.

The teen’s defense attorney also requested submittal of known video, bike camera footage and audio from the night of the shooting in hopes it could be used as evidence to convince the judge to release her defendant from custody.

Lucero responded to that with noting that the record would reflect request for a re-hearing.

The teen was detained after officers found him in a vehicle that was seen near the shooting, in which a man was shot at least once in the 300 block of Keyes Street.

Officers were called to area around 2:30 a.m. and found the man in critical condition. He was pronounced dead at the scene, San Jose police said.

The defendant’s mother was present at the hearing but his father was not, as the hearing was originally scheduled for earlier in the day.

The decision of whether or not the defendant will be charged as an adult due to a motion filed by the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office will be decided at his next appearance on Mar. 8th.
