Canadian PM Trudeau meets with Gov. Brown

Celebrity politicians were the order of the day as Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met separately with California Gov. Jerry Brown and Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom in San Francisco Friday.

In the meeting between Brown and Trudeau, the two pledged to expand cooperation on climate action, trade and criminal justice reform, issues in which both California and Canada have emerged as leaders.

Brown said in a statement:

“I’m looking forward to forging agreements with various provinces in Canada and particularly in zero-emission vehicles – electric cars, hydrogen cars.”

The prime minister thanked Brown:

“for the cap-and-trade system Ontario is part of and others and the fact that we have so much work to do together as friends and as a planet.”

After the meeting with Newsom, Trudeau tweeted:

“Trade between Canada & California has created millions of middle class jobs and economic growth on both sides of the border. My thanks to @GavinNewsom for a great discussion on how we can increase trade.”

Newsom retweeted the prime minister’s tweet and sent out one of his own:

“Great, far-reaching conversation with @JustinTrudeau this morning about immigration, universal healthcare, and climate change. Plus, the guy’s got great hair!”

The latter comment was a self-mocking commentary on the fact that Newsom himself has received a good deal of attention centered around his good looks, and particularly his hair – as has Trudeau.
