Pilot in fatal Concord plane crash identified

The pilot and sole occupant of a small single-engine plane that crashed near Concord late Monday morning has been identified as 69-year-old Christopher Rampoldt of Martinez, according to the Contra Costa County coroner’s office.

The Cessna 152 took off from Buchanan Field Airport around 10:30 a.m., according to Ian Gregor with the Federal Aviation Administration, then crashed on federal land at Military Ocean Terminal Concord.

Federal firefighters on base responded to the crash and reported the fatality to the coroner’s office, according to Contra Costa County Fire Protection District Marshal Robert Marshall.

The crash is under investigation by the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board.
