Driver caught after three-county freeway chase

A man was arrested after he allegedly led the California Highway Patrol from the East Bay through San Francisco, over the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge and back into the East Bay on Monday morning, CHP officials said.

The chase began at 8:42 a.m. when a motorcycle officer saw 28-year-old South San Francisco resident Anthony Sorell driving a Chevrolet pickup truck in the high-occupancy vehicle lane by the Bay Bridge toll plaza.

CHP officials allege Sorell was the only person in the truck. The officer turned on his emergency lights and siren but Sorell allegedly accelerated to the left shoulder and sped past other vehicles.

CHP officials said another officer joined the pursuit at Treasure Island. One of the officers told dispatchers that Sorell appeared to have a knife in his hand, which he was allegedly waving out the window and appeared to be talking to himself.

Sorell allegedly drove north on U.S. Highway 101 in San Francisco and exited at Duboce Avenue. A CHP sergeant and a CHP helicopter joined the chase. CHP officials said Sorell drove on several San Francisco city streets and allegedly committed numerous code violations.

At Van Ness Avenue, Sorell allegedly turned south and continued south on Highway 101 in moderate traffic at speeds of 20 to 70 mph.

CHP officials said Sorell allegedly turned onto eastbound state Highway 92 and then onto the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge traveling at speeds of up to 90 mph in light traffic.

Sorell allegedly drove into a Hayward residential neighborhood where he stopped at a red light, and the CHP sergeant was able to stop him using a pursuit intervention technique.

Sorell was arrested without any other trouble, according to the CHP.
