Oakland pedestrian dies in hit-and-run

A pedestrian who was killed in a hit-and-run collision in East Oakland early Thursday morning was identified by the Alameda County coroner’s bureau Friday as 69-year-old John Edward Winslow of Oakland.

A preliminary investigation found that a black compact vehicle that was traveling westbound in the 9200 block of MacArthur Boulevard about 1:20 a.m. on Thursday struck Winslow, who was in the roadway, police said.

After stopping momentarily, the driver fled from the scene in the vehicle without providing any information or waiting for emergency personnel, according to police.

Firefighters and paramedics responded to the scene but Winslow succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Police said it is unknown if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the fatal collision.

Oakland police are still seeking the driver and the vehicle he was driving.

They said anyone with information about the fatal collision should call their traffic unit at (510) 777-8570.
