The Athletics have taken great pride in celebrating their 50 years in Oakland.
From putting together a 50th Anniversary Team — a collection of the 50 greatest players to don the Oakland green and gold, selected by the fans — to offering free tickets to their showdown with the Chicago White Sox April 17 — the 50th anniversary of the Oakland Coliseum’s first A’s game.
Taking the celebration one step further, the organization, on Friday, unveiled its new “Kelly Green” alternate jerseys, to be worn for all Friday home games this season.
Beyond the deep green, an ode to that worn by A’s of yesteryear, these alternate jerseys also bare the name of the organization’s home of a half-century. Rather than “Athletics” or just “A’s” as the team’s home uniforms have featured on their fronts in the past, these Friday specials will be emblazoned with “Oakland” and display a 50th Anniversary Season patch on the right sleeve.
Former A’s pitcher and current television analyst Dallas Braden served as the emcee of the day’s festivities, saying of the jerseys:
“The jersey has the city of Oakland on the front, because there is no better place in the world. … This jersey, remember is a nod to the A’s rich history, since Kelly Green became one of the A’s colors back in 1961.”
