Pockets of hail, snow scatter across Bay Area

Unusual weather conditions led to hazardous road conditions Thursday as scattered hailstorms made roadways slippery throughout the Bay Area, according to the National Weather Service.

Drivers encountering a slippery roadway are advised to avoid using their brakes. Ease off the gas, instead, and slow down.

Hail has been reported ranging from pea-sized to three-quarters of an inch in diameter. It covered over U.S. Highway 101 near Gilroy, and snowfall has been photographed at the Lick Observatory on Mt. Hamilton in Santa Clara County.

Those locations are both in the South Bay, but Meteorologist Carolina Walbrun says pockets of weather like that are hit or miss, but happening all over the Bay Area Thursday:

“They’re everywhere. … They’re going to be popping up and down as they move through the area.”

Lightning strikes were also been recorded near Petaluma.
