City offers aid to burned-out West Portal businesses

Three San Francisco businesses affected by a three-alarm fire on Tuesday night in the West Portal neighborhood will receive funds from The City to help with financial needs while the businesses assess damages and work to reopen.

Mayor Mark Farrell told the Office of Economic and Workforce Development to activate the Small Business Relief Fund, which will allow businesses to access up to $10,000 from the fund to help with everything from replacing equipment to paying employee salaries.

Farrell on Wednesday afternoon toured the three businesses on West Portal Avenue with staff from OEWD.

The three businesses that suffered fire or water damage were Papenhausen Hardware, The West Portal Daily and Sloane Square Beauty Salon. The fire affected more than 18 employees, according to OEWD.

Farrell said in a statement that it was crucial for the small businesses to receive support from The City to recover and reopen quickly:

“Dealing with the trauma of a fire is difficult and we are here to support our small business owners and their employees. We want them to be back in business as soon as possible. Our city succeeds when our small businesses succeed.”

President of the West Portal Merchant Association Deirdre Von Rock-Ricci said:

“As a merchant association, this fund will ensue our businesses and their employees have immediate access to resources that are important to the continuity of our community. We are grateful for this service.”
