A man serving an 80-year to life term for murdering a former friend on a Livermore golf course in 2012 is among two inmates suspected in the slaying of a fellow inmate at the Folsom state prison, California Department of Corrections officials said Thursday.
Jacob Kober, 29, of Livermore, is suspected in the death of inmate Devlin Stringfellow, 48, who was assaulted at about 2:15 p.m. Wednesday in an exercise yard at the maximum security prison east of Sacramento.
Stringfellow was taken to the prison’s medical clinic, where he was pronounced dead at 2:50 p.m. on Wednesday.
Department of Corrections officials said two inmate-manufactured weapons were found at the scene.
Kober was convicted in February 2015 of first-degree murder for the fatal shooting of 28-year-old Kenneth Robert Ogden, his former friend, on Dec. 28, 2012.
Ogden’s body was discovered the next morning by a man who lives on Galaxy Court in Livermore and saw him lying on the grass alongside the Springtown Golf Course fairway and neighboring bicycle paths, police said.
A woman who had been jogging on the golf course had yelled at the man for help after she spotted the body from afar, according to police.
The man called police and officers and paramedics who responded to the scene found Ogden, who lived in Livermore, dead of multiple gunshot wounds, police said.
Prosecutors from the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office said Kober and Ogden were longtime friends but in late 2012 they had a falling out because Ogden owed money to Kober and Kober believed that Ogden had tried to kiss his girlfriend.
Prosecutors said that on the night of Dec. 28, 2012, Ogden came to talk things over with Kober near the Springtown Golf Course.
They said Kober and Ogden walked out onto the golf course and Ogden was found dead the next morning, shot once in the left arm and once in the right side.
Kober, who worked as a janitor, fled to Oakland and then to Oregon, where he was arrested on Jan. 16, 2013, and later extradited back to California.
Department of Corrections officials said Stringfellow was serving a six-year sentence for his conviction in Los Angeles County for possession of a controlled substance for sale, carrying a concealed dirk or dagger, and assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury and was scheduled to be released in June 2020.
They said the second suspect in Stringfellow’s death is Stephen Dunckhurst, 49, who is serving a life sentence for his conviction in Shasta County for vehicle theft and possession and manufacture of a deadly weapon by a prisoner.
Dunckhurst also is serving a three-year term for second-degree robbery.
Department of Corrections officials said Kober and Dunckhurst have been placed in an administrative segregation Unit as Stringfellow’s death is being investigated.
They said the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office is assisting in the investigation and the Office of the Inspector General has been notified.
