A 52-year-old Oakland man died after apparently driving the wrong way on southbound Interstate Highway 880 just north of state Highway 237 in Milpitas early Tuesday morning, causing a collision with four other vehicles, according to the California Highway Patrol.
At about 4:50 a.m., the female driver of a Buick was driving south in the second lane from the left on Highway 880 when she saw headlights coming at her between her lane and the one on her right-hand side, CHP spokesman Officer Ross Lee said.
She swerved to her left to avoid a collision, but the Ford van that was going the wrong way hit the back quarter panel of her vehicle on the passenger side, according to Lee.
The van then hit a Honda pickup truck head-on. After hitting the pickup truck, the driver lost control of the van and spun out to the left, hitting a Mercedes-Benz that was then rear-ended by a Honda Civic, according to Lee.
The driver of the van, the Oakland man, has died. One driver out of the group of cars that he hit is being treated at a hospital for minor injuries.
Lee said investigators do not yet know whether drugs or alcohol played part in the collision.
