A preliminary magnitude 4.5 earthquake shook awake Bay Area residents at 2:39 a.m. Thursday morning.
The earthquake was reported by the UC Berkeley Seismological Laboratory as occurring 2 miles east-southeast of Berkeley, Calif. approximately 8 miles beneath the surface. The earthquake appears to have occurred near the Hayward fault.
The quake was reported as a strong jolt and rumble in San Francisco, and was felt as far away as Palo Alto and Napa.
