Police kill suspect who fired at them

Police said they shot a person to death who shot at them Saturday afternoon outside a Redwood City bank.

Someone called police at about 2:25 p.m. to tell them that a person with a black handgun was outside the Wells Fargo bank at 1900 Broadway.

The person with the gun was pacing back and forth in front of the ATM machine area.

Officers went to the bank and recognized the person from previous encounters with police.

Officers set up perimeters to keep the suspect from escaping and to protect the safety of other people in the area.

Police said they started talking to the suspect to try to establish rapport and de-escalate the situation and have the suspect surrender peacefully.

But the suspect continued to pace back and forth with his finger on the trigger of the gun.

The suspect also did not disarm himself as officers asked him to.

Police said they started deploying less-than-lethal weapons but before they could use them, the suspect fired a number of shots in the direction of officers.

Officers returned fired and the suspect was pronounced dead a short while later.

The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave. Police said an investigation into the shooting will be done by the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office.
