Ride free, ride late on Muni for New Year’s Eve

San Francisco’s transportation agency is offering free rides on Muni starting on New Year’s Eve at 8 p.m. until New Year’s Day at 5 a.m.

Along with the free rides, the transit agency said it will provide extra service Muni Metro service all night from West Portal to the Embarcadero until 5 a.m. and from West Portal to Fourth and King streets until 2:15 a.m.

Muni riders with Clipper cards should remember not to tag their card or else face paying a fare during the free Muni time period.

After 8 p.m., BART will run a special service to and from San Francisco until 3 a.m. BART riders should take note that trains from the East Bay heading into San Francisco will either stop at the Montgomery or Embarcadero stations.

BART riders heading back to the East Bay will need to board those same stations. Riders will need to use the Montgomery Station to board the Pittsburg/Bay Point and Richmond line trains or use the Embarcadero Station to board the Dublin/ Pleasanton and So. Fremont/Warm Springs line trains.

New fare charges on BART will not take effect during the special service, but will go into effect on New Year’s day at 8 a.m.

In addition, SamTrans and Caltrain will offer free service at 8 p.m. Dec. 31, 2017 until Jan. 1, 2018 at 5 a.m.
