SUV kills pedestrian near Fremont Hub

A male pedestrian was killed when he was struck by a car near the Fremont Hub shopping center just before 10 a.m. Friday, according to Fremont police Sgt. Ricardo Cortes.

The male driver of a Nissan Rogue compact SUV was traveling southbound on Argonaut Way near Mowry Avenue when he lost control for an unknown reason and hit the back of a parked cargo trailer, the pedestrian and a fire hydrant, Cortes said.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Cortes. His name hasn’t yet been released.

The driver was also injured in the collision and was transported to a local hospital to be treated for injuries that aren’t considered to be life-threatening, Fremont police spokeswoman Geneva Bosques said.

Investigators haven’t yet determined if speed, alcohol or drugs played a role in the collision, Cortes said.

Fremont police have issued an alert advising drivers to avoid the intersection of Mowry Avenue and Argonaut Way and saying that Argonaut will be closed between Mowry and Sacramento Avenue until at least 3 p.m. while officers finish investigating the collision.

Cortes described the area where the collision occurred as “a heavily-traveled roadway” because it’s next to the shopping center, other businesses and housing complexes.
