California Highway Patrol officers arrested two teens on suspicion of street racing and reckless driving on U.S. Highway 101 in Sonoma County on Saturday night.
Around 8:50 p.m., 18-year-old Chad McChinak of Santa Rosa was driving a Toyota Scion and a 17-year-old male from Healdsburg was driving a BMW in and out of traffic around 85 mph south on Highway 101 near River Road, CHP Officer Jon Sloat said.
A passenger in the Scion stuck his upper torso out of the window and waved at the BMW during the race. The two vehicles then lined up side-by-side and quickly accelerated to more than 100 mph, Sloat said.
A CHP officer followed the vehicles and requested an additional CHP patrol car to make a traffic stop, Sloat said.
The BMW stopped as it approached Steele Lane. The Scion then exited the highway at Steele Lane, according to Sloat.
Although McChinak allegedly admitted he had been drinking, he was not found to be under the influence. He was arrested and booked into Sonoma County Jail on suspicion of reckless driving, street racing and being under 21 with a blood-alcohol content of more than 0.01 percent, Sloat said.
McChinak admitted he knew the juvenile driver and challenged him to a race, Sloat said.
The 17-year-old driver was booked into juvenile hall on suspicion of street racing and reckless driving.
