A fire at the Sports Center at Allan Witt Park Sunday morning caused extensive damage to the men’s sauna, and smoke and heat damage to the men’s locker room and main floor of the 10,000-square-foot building, City of Fairfield officials said.
The fire was reported around 10:50 a.m. It was knocked down at 11:03 a.m. and controlled at 11:40 a.m., Acting Fairfield Fire Department Battalion Chief Robb Herrick said.
The fire started in the men’s locker room and the cause appears to be accidental, Herrick said.
The Sports Center was not open to the public Sunday, but some part-time city employees were working in the building at the time, Herrick said.
The Aquatics Complex at Allan Witt Park at 1741 W. Texas St. was not burned and remains open, but will close Dec. 22-25 and on Dec. 29 for the holidays. It also will close through March 4 for maintenance.
The Sports Center is expected to remain closed for restoration and cleanup through January 2018. It is used for basketball and volleyball games and gymnastic events, Herrick said.
Firefighters from Vacaville and Dixon, the Solano County Fire investigation unit, Medic ambulance and PG&E also responded to the fire.
