Driver arrested in September fatal bicyclist crash

A 19-year-old Watsonville man has been arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter after an investigation determined he was speeding when he struck and killed a bicyclist in a traffic collision in September, police said.

Watsonville police said Jesus Castillo was arrested Wednesday, months after striking the bicyclist – identified by the Santa Cruz Sheriff’s Office as Jennie Gervasio, 56, of Aptos – at the intersection of Main Street and Auto Center Drive on Monday, Sept. 11.

Police said Castillo was allegedly speeding and that Gervasio ran a red light while crossing Main Street before his vehicle collided with her bike.

Watsonville police received a call about the collision around 6:35 p.m. and arrived to find Gervasio lying in the roadway. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Castillo stayed at the scene and cooperated with police. Sheriff’s Sgt. Chris Clark said Gervasio died of multiple blunt force injuries from the collision.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call the Watsonville police investigation division at (831) 768-3350. Those wishing to stay anonymous can call (831) 768-3544.
