Holiday meals prepped for people in need

Public service organizations and charities delivered turkeys and prepared Thanksgiving dinners for families and people in need Wednesday and in preparation for the Thursday holiday.

In San Francisco, police, sheriff’s deputies and firefighters will prepare hundreds of meals at the Lady Shaw Senior Center on Thursday to be delivered to shut-in seniors.

According to police, the work will start at 8 a.m. and deliveries of meals will start at 10:30 a.m. Police said that law enforcement and fire crews volunteer each year to deliver meals to seniors throughout the city.

The preparation of the meals are for seniors who can’t attend the annual Thanksgiving luncheon provided by Self Help for the Elderly, a charity based in San Francisco that will hold the luncheon at several locations in the city Thursday.

In Berkeley, police officers and the Berkeley Police Association delivered around 200 baskets of food to families in-need today. Both organizations will be accepting donations through a GoFundMe page at www.gofundme.com/berkeley-turkey-baskets.

In San Jose, Evergreen Community College provided more than 400 students with turkeys and fixings. The college said students were selected to get the dinners through its Academic Support Program.

The Monument Crisis Center in Concord held a Thanksgiving meal pick-up for its low-income and at-risk clients today at 9 a.m.
