49ers trade Rashard Robinson to the Jets

After making a splash trade on Monday, acquiring Jimmy Garoppolo from the New England Patriots, the 49ers had more moving and shaking to do just minutes before the trade deadline hit at 1 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

San Francisco has traded cornerback Rashard Robinson to the New York Jets, According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. In return the 49ers (0-8) received a fifth-round pick, per Peter Schrager of Fox Sports.

Robinson, a 2016 fourth-round pick by former general manager Trent Baalke, played a total of 22 games (13 starts) for the 49ers. In those 22 games, recording 45 tackles and two interceptions.

Up until this point, Robinson had filled the 49ers No.1 cornerback role, matching up with the best receiver on the other side of the line of scrimmage every week. He did not live up to the billing, though, as he was repeatedly picked on by opposing offenses becoming a consistent target for quarterbacks and receivers to exploit.

On top of his troubles being outrun and outmuscled, Robinson has also had issues avoiding penalties, particularly pass interference and defensive holding flags.

As of Week 8, Robinson was penalized 10 times with eight of them being accepted which ranks as the second most in the league, per Rich Cimini of ESPN.

The 49ers now have four corners on their roster: Dontae Johnson, Ahkello Witherspoon, K’Waun Williams and Leon Hall with which to fill the spot left vacant by Robinson’s departure.
