Kids’ hide-and-seek game ends in rescue

A game of hide-and-seek between siblings led to a toddler being locked inside a gun safe Monday afternoon, Santa Clara police said.

According to Lt. Dan Moreno, the toddler was unharmed after incident, which occurred at about 12:20 p.m. in the 2400 block of Franciscan Court.

A nanny was home at the time when the toddler was locked in the safe by his sibling, a 3-year-old, fire officials said.

The safe was apparently ajar and empty at the time.

The nanny then contacted the mother who called 911, prompting fire crews to respond.

Clara Fire Battalion Chief Drew Miller said the combination for the 4-foot safe was available, but the specific instructions to open it were not known.

Fire crews were ultimately able to free the child after about 20 minutes.

Fire officials said the toddler was “a little shaken up, but unharmed.”
