Bay Area teams donate $450,000 to North Bay fire relief

The Bay Area’s seven major professional sports organizations have untied to donate a combined $450,000 to the North Bay fire relief efforts, according to a press release.

The Oakland Raiders, Oakland Athletics, San Francisco 49ers, San Francisco Giants, Golden State Warriors, San Jose Sharks and San Jose Earthquakes announced their involvement in the donation effort Wednesday.

Seventeen different fires have spread across four different counties, leaving over 2,000 structures destroyed and killing at least 17 people, according to ABC7, since the fires started Sunday night. Officials from all seven teams expressed their sadness at the effects of the fires and support for the region. 49ers CEO Jed York said in the release:

“The North Bay fires have devastated families, homes, businesses, and schools across the region and as first responders work tirelessly to put out the fires and aid those in need, Bay Area sports teams are unified in supporting relief efforts.”

Earthquakes President Tom Fox:

“The world has faced an unimaginable amount of tragedy and devastation in the past few months and the fires in the North Bay hit particularly close to home.”

A’s President Dave Kaval:

“We are proud to team up with all of the Bay Area professional sports teams to support North Bay disaster relief efforts.”

In addition to the donation, the coalition set up a YouCaring site for fans to donate in support of fire victims, which has accumulated $462,138 of the $900,000 goal as of 4 p.m. Wednesday. To donate, go to www.youcaring.com/firerelief or text REDCROSS to 90999 to give $10 to the American Red Cross’ disaster relief efforts.
