Stacee Etcheber confirmed killed in Vegas shooting

A Novato hairstylist who was married to a San Francisco police officer was among those killed Sunday night at a concert in Las Vegas where a gunman opened fire on the crowd.

Stacee Etcheber’s death was announced this morning by her brother-in-law in a Facebook post. Etcheber leaves behind two children and her husband, Officer Vinnie Etcheber.

More than 22,000 people attended the Route 91 Harvest Festival, an outdoor country music concert that was held near the Las Vegas Strip.

Shortly after 10 p.m., 64-year-old Stephen Craig Paddock opened fire on the crowd from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel, Las Vegas police said.

During the ordeal, Officer Etcheber told his wife to flee the scene while he stayed behind to help victims, according to a statement from San Francisco Police Officers Association President Martin Halloran. She did not have a cellphone with her and had given her identification card to her husband.

Police Chief William Scott said in a statement:

“Stacee was taken in a senseless act of violence as her husband, SFPD Officer Vinnie Etcheber, heroically rushed to aid shooting victims in Las Vegas on Sunday.”

Halloran said:

“Stacee was a wonderful, caring wife, mother, and daughter. … She will be terribly missed.”

The shooting killed 59 people and left 516 other injured, police said.

In a statement, San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee said:

“We are sending our deepest condolences and sympathies to the hundreds of families affected by this senseless act of gun violence.”

Alameda County Fire Department officials said Monday on social media that three off-duty firefighters from their department also attended the concert. They were not injured and were able to provide aid to victims.

A vigil is planned for Stacee Etcheber at San Ramon Elementary School at 45 San Ramon Way in Novato at 7 p.m. today.
