Reuben Foster questionable after first-half ankle injury

49ers starting rookie linebacker Reuben Foster is officially listed as questionable to return after injuring his ankle in the first quarter of San Francisco’s season opener against the Carolina Panthers.

This story will be updated with quotes and post-game material from the 49ers locker room at Levi’s Stadium.

Foster, who secured the starting weak-side linebacker role this offseason, was carted off of the filed after falling during an attempted tackle on Carolina’s starting running back, Christian McCaffrey.

In two opening drives against the Panthers, the 49ers defense held Carolina to only 17 yards and forced two punts.

On both defensive stands, Foster played a crucial role by bottling up the run and making good reads when dropping back into pass coverage. Foster nearly hauled in an interception as well that would have gone for a touchdown, had it been caught.

After a brief stint in the locker room to be examined, Foster returned to the field but has not re-entered the game.
