It’s been almost exactly one year since Colin Kaepernick first kneeled in protest of the national anthem.
Since then, he’s been condemned by current and former NFL players, widely assailed on social media, and remains without a job after opting out of his San Francisco 49ers contract.
But some NFL players, including Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, are still shocked he hasn’t landed a spot in the league.
In a wide-ranging press conference Tuesday, Newton added himself to the list of individuals in favor of Kaepernick getting signed:
“I really think it’s unfair. … Do I think Kaepernick is better than some of these starting quarterbacks in this league? Absolutely. Should he be on a roster? in my opinion, Absolutely.”
Kaepernick appeared in 12 games with the 49ers in 2016, throwing for 2,241 yards, 16 touchdowns and a 59.2 completion percentage. He rushed for an additional 468 yards.
Though several teams have expressed interest in Kaepernick, he remains a free agent just days before the 2017 season is set to kick off.
