Don’t expect to see too many exciting new faces taking the field for the Giants, at least as the September call-up party kicks off, Bruce Bochy said before Thursday’s game.
Orlando Calixte, Steven Okert, Tim Federowicz and Derek Law will make up the first round of September call-ups Friday. Federowicz is not on the 40-man roster, Jae-gyun Hwang was outrighted off the 40-man to make room for Fed-X.
The team also has to go into protection mode for some of their Rule 5 draft eligible players — essentially any player drafted in 2014 or earlier. The other 40-man spots likely to be vacated for them could be Michael Morse (DFA) and Chase Johnson (60-day DL).
A lefty specialist remains a gaping hole in the Giants’ bullpen. Lefty DJ Snelten, who has a 2.02 ERA with Sacramento and a 2.00 ERA against lefties, could be worthy of a 40-man spot. They may also consider Tyler Rogers, a righty with a 2.34 ERA, 2.01 against lefties, in Sacramento this year.
Catcher Aramis Garcia, who was selected to play in the Arizona Fall League with Duggar, Beede and Tyler Cyr could be an outside challenge for the last spot. He’s slashing .272/.322/.485 with San Jose and Richmond.
There wasn’t much of a chance prospects like Steven Duggar, Andrew Suarez or Chris Shaw would suit up for San Francisco, anyway. There’s no pressure to start the clock on them and injuries to Christian Arroyo and Tyler Beede might have pumped the breaks a little harder on a full-on September prospect parade.
It would have been more fun to watch, sure, but September in San Francisco’s front office will probably stay calm and strategic.
