First Rickey Henderson. Then Catfish Hunter. Now, Dennis Eckersley will have his place in Oakland Athletics lore cemented.
The A’s announced plans, Tuesday, continuing their promise to celebrate the organization’s rich history, scheduling a dedication of the Oakland Coliseum “D Gate” in Eckersley’s honor.
“Eck” spent nine seasons of his 24-year Hall-of-Fame career in Oakland, converting 320 saves including a league-leading 51 in 1992 en route to claiming the MVP and Cy Young awards. He posted a 41-31 record and 2.74 ERA, adding 11 saves and a 2.38 ERA in 20 postseason games — including the final three outs of the 4-0 sweep in the 1989 “Battle of the Bay” World Series — while in the green and gold.
The dedication ceremony will be held on Friday, Aug 25, at 4 p.m., prior to the A’s-Texas Rangers game. Joining Eckersley and his family, former A’s teammates in attendance will include Henderson, Carney Lansford, Mike Moore and Terry Steinbach.
The following day, Aug. 26, the A’s will continue its weekend of Eck with “Dennis Eckersley Day,” including bobbleheads to be given to the first 15,00 fans and the hurler himself throwing out the game’s ceremonial first pitch.
