Trespassing charges are being sought against two Wisconsin residents who climbed the Golden Gate Bridge and posted a video of the stunt on YouTube, California Highway Patrol officials said Saturday.
Authorities became aware of the stunt following the discovery of the YouTube video, which was posted May 7.
Officials with the CHP’s Marin Area office sent a report to the Marin County District Attorney’s Office recommending that both men be charged with one count of misdemeanor trespassing.
Anyone convicted of illegally climbing the bridge faces up to a year in jail.
CHP officials said the names of the men are Peter Keurer, 18, of Allentown and Thomas Rector, 21, of Sussex.
The video shows the two climbing the north tower from the west sidewalk and doing backflips, somersaults and hanging from their fingertips without any safety equipment, CHP officials said.
The stunt prompted a review of the security at the bridge because the men completed their escapade without being detected.
