It may have taken nearly three months to complete, but 49ers third-overall pick Solomon Thomas officially signed his rookie deal 40 minutes into the first on-field workouts of training camp Friday afternoon.
Nearly 24 hours after San Francisco general manager John Lynch voiced “concerns” regarding Thomas’s deal, this photo was tweeted from Lynch’s account:
According to SBNation, Thomas inked a deal that will earn him roughly $28 million over four years with the red and gold.
The Stanford alumni racked up 40 solo tackles, including 8.5 sacks, during his junior year as a Cardinal and was touted as the second-best pass rusher in the 2017 NFL draft class behind former Texas A&M star, Myles Garrett.
Unfortunately for the 49ers though, Thomas was unable to participate in OTA’s and rookie minicamps due to the quarter-system at Stanford. According to the current CBA, NFL rookies are prohibited from training with teams while their school’s academic year is still in session.
With this in mind, Thomas addressed his readiness for camp and said:
“I feel like in all of my training, I’ve been doing great. Just putting in extra work on my own. In my time off, I was training and getting ready. I had lots of film so I feel like I’m right there with everyone else.”
Because Thomas did not sign his deal before on-field workouts began, much of the day was dedicated to conditioning tests with team trainer Ray Wright, which did not allow him to participate in any position or team drills.
According to head coach Kyle Shanahan, the plan for Thomas moving forward is to begin drills on Saturday for Day 2 of camp:
“We’ll be ready to go tomorrow. If he would have come in a little bit earlier, they would have had him go out there today. Solomon is a guy who’s in shape. … I expect him to be out there tomorrow.”
With Thomas signing his rookie deal, just two first-round picks have yet to sign contracts: Titans fifth-overall pick Corey Davis and Raiders Gareon Conley (No. 24).
