Victim shot to death pushing child in stroller

A man who was fatally shot in unincorporated Hayward Wednesday afternoon was pushing a stroller with a 3-month-old infant inside at the time, a spokesman for the Alameda County sheriff’s office said.

Sgt. Ray Kelly said the shooting, which occurred in the 200 block of Willow Avenue at about 3 p.m., was “pretty disturbing.” Kelly said deputies who responded to the shooting found a man on the ground suffering from gunshot wounds and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Kelly said investigators, who are canvassing the area to gather evidence, will be looking at whether the victim was targeted.

He said:

“When someone is shot while he’s pushing an infant in a stroller it’s a little concerning.”

Kelly said the infant is safe and is in the custody of sheriff’s deputies.

The victim’s identity has not been released.

Authorities are trying to determine if the victim was the baby’s father and are also trying to locate the baby’s mother.

There’s no information on the suspect at this time but the nature of the shooting indicates that the suspect is dangerous, according to Kelly.

The area, which is near Cherryland Park, as a middle-class residential neighborhood that’s not a high-crime area, Kelly said.

Anyone who has information about the shooting should call the sheriff’s dispatch office at (510) 667-7721.
