Bay Bridge reopens after officer-involved shooting

The California Highway Patrol has reopened all eastbound lanes on the Bay Bridge after an officer-involved shooting occurred early Sunday morning that motorists stranded for hours.

CHP officials said in a statement that patrol units initially responded to a multiple vehicle collision at 3:25 a.m. in the eastbound direction of the Bay Bridge, a mile west of the Bay Bridge Toll Plaza.

Approximately 20 minutes later, officers noticed a driver in a red vehicle coming towards them on the right shoulder at the scene of the collision. CHP officers commanded the vehicle to stop, but the driver continued moving forward, according to the CHP.

As the vehicle continued moving forward, a CHP officer felt threatened and fired several rounds at the vehicle, wounding the driver. The red vehicle did have passengers inside, but the gunfire did not strike any of the passengers, CHP officials said.

Emergency crews were called to the scene to take the driver to a local hospital. No word yet on the driver’s condition.

Officers detained the passengers at the scene for questioning by officers.

CHP officials said the investigation is still preliminary and ongoing.
