Officials with California Water Service announced Saturday afternoon that the water is safe to drink for residents of the Sunshine Gardens area of South San Francisco.
About 3,000 customers at 1,000 locations were asked to use bottled water after Colma police were called to investigate reports that vandals had cut a lock to the vent of a water tank in the 2500 block of Hillside Boulevard Friday morning.
The first tests of the water found it safe and follow-up tests today confirmed that the water quality was not affected by the break-in, according to California Water Service officials.
Mike Utz, Cal Water’s Bayshore District assistant district manager, said in a statement Saturday afternoon:
“We were not willing to risk our customers’ health and safety until the results showed it was safe to resume normal water use.”
Cal Water distributed roughly 94,500 bottles of water while people were unable to drink from their taps.
People who bought water can turn in their receipts to Cal Water to be reimbursed.
Cal Water officials are investigating the break-in with the State’s Division of Drinking Water and local police.
