A family of six from Beijing crashed a 2017 Mercedes Metris into a tree on state Highway 1 in Big Sur on Wednesday afternoon, killing a 57-year-old woman named Xia Wang, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Wang, who was not wearing her seatbelt, died at the scene.
Another 58-year-old passenger who was not wearing his seatbelt was flown to Natividad Medical Center in Salinas, where he remained in serious condition on Thursday afternoon.
The 61-year-old man driving and three other women passengers age 27, 30 and 57 were all wearing seatbelts and were taken to NMC with minor complaints of pain.
The southbound Mercedes crashed into a tree on the west shoulder of the highway after passing Captain Cooper Elementary School around 3:20 p.m.
CHP investigators believe the driver was sober.
