An inmate in a San Francisco county jail in San Bruno died Sunday, sheriff’s officials said Tuesday.
The prisoner, identified by the San Mateo County coroner’s office as 25-year-old San Pablo resident Jesus Octavio Rodriguez, was found unresponsive in his cell in County Jail No. 5 around 7:15 a.m. Sunday by a deputy, according to San Francisco sheriff’s spokeswoman Eileen Hirst.
Jail health services and San Bruno firefighters responded and attempted to revive Rodriguez using CPR and automated defibrillators, but were unsuccessful.
The death is being investigated by the coroner’s office and the sheriff’s department, but there are no obvious signs of foul play, Hirst said.
Rodriguez was arrested in September 2011 following an incident in which allegedly pointed a gun at San Francisco officers during a foot pursuit in the city’s North Beach neighborhood.
An officer fired at him during the pursuit and accidentally struck two bystanders, according to police.
The victims, an Oakley man and a Yountville woman, were hospitalized after the shooting but were later released.
Hirst said the last in-custody death for the sheriff’s department was in October 2015.
