Kite surfers rescued off Candlestick Point

Two kite surfers were rescued from the waters off San Francisco’s Candlestick Point Saturday evening after one of their kites became entangled with a buoy, according to a U.S. Coast Guard spokesman.

At about 7 p.m., the Coast Guard was called out to search the area after getting a report that the pair had failed to return from their excursion, said Coast Guard spokesman Chief Cody Staneart.

The two men, an instructor in his early 20s and a man in his 40s, were due to return to land between about 5 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.

They were unable to get back to shore, however, after the older man’s kite became entangled with a buoy, Staneart said.

The younger man was able to circle back to the trapped surfer and stayed with him to await rescue.

Search and rescue crews from San Mateo County and Oyster Point Marina in South San Francisco assisted the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Pike, which launched from its home port of Yerba Buena Island.

Staneart said:

“Because they were kite surfing they were well prepared. … One was in a wetsuit and one was in a dry suit.”

Both men were taken to the hospital as a precaution but they seemed to be in good condition, Staneart said.
