The small Glastar plane was returning to Concord due to a mechanical problem and crashed short of the runway outside the airport, according to Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor.
The plane came to rest at the intersection of Solano Way and Marsh Drive. The pilot was the only person on board at the time of the crash, Gregor said.
Contra Costa Fire Protection District tweeted out photos of the crash around 3 p.m.
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the incident, Gregor said.
The pilot was transported to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek. No additional information was immediately available.
