Two men die in Lake Berryessa plane crash

Two men employed by a Vacaville amphibious light sport aircraft company ICON Aircraft died when one of the planes crashed at Lake Berryessa Monday morning, the Napa County Sheriff’s Office said.

The sheriff’s office identified them as Jon Murray Karkow, 55, and Cagri Sever, 41, both of Vacaville. Karkow, the pilot of the ICON A5 Amphibious Light Sport Aircraft and an engineering fellow at ICON Aircraft, previously lived in Tehachapi, and Sever moved from Ann Arbor, Michigan just a week ago, the sheriff’s office said.

Their bodies were removed from the small two-seat aircraft, which has been a common sight recently over the Lake Berryessa area, sheriff’s Capt. Steve Blower said.

Efforts were still underway this afternoon to recover the plane, Blower said.

The plane, capable of landing on water, crashed around 9:20 a.m. into land in the area of Little Portuguese Cove at the eastern end of Lake Berryessa between Pleasure Cove Marina and Markley Cove Resort, Blower said.

Deputy sheriffs and emergency personnel had to approach the crash site by boat, Blower said.

Autopsies on the men are expected to be completed by the end of this week.
