Explosive-detection K-9 teams from federal, state and local law enforcement agencies participated in maritime training Tuesday at the Berkeley Marina to hone their explosive-ordnance detection skills.
The event, called Bomb Dogs on the Bay, welcomed more than 60 participants from the U.S. Coast Guard, the Transportation Security Administration, BART, sheriff’s offices from Alameda and Sacramento counties, and local police departments.
The training gave law enforcement agencies an opportunity to familiarize K-9s and their handlers with the noise, movement and vibration aboard a small boat and cruise ship.
K-9 teams also conducted shoreside passenger screening and vehicle and vessel sweeps.
Coast Guard Petty Officer First Class Cory Sumner said in a statement:
“This event is outside normal duties for partner agencies, and as a handler you want your dog to be comfortable in as many places as possible. … Our K-9s are accustomed to the noise and being aboard boats while other agencies might not be. In case they have to be called out to search a boat, at least they now know what to expect if they have to deploy.”
