The injury was not incurred during his much-anticipated return to the Kansas City mound; he sprained his left shoulder — you know, the one he throws with — and bruised his ribs in a dirt bike accident during Thursday’s off day in Denver.
The Giants classified the left shoulder AC sprain as “grade one or two,” and Bumgarner will be re-evaluated next week.
The four-time All-Star was hospitalized after the incident and is now resting at the team hotel.
As for the state of the rotation: lefty Ty Blach is the next man up, presumably. He has a 5.79 ERA in 4-2/3 innings this season, but has yet to get a spot start under his belt in 2017.
Bumgarner’s next scheduled start would have been against the Dodgers on April 25. Blach has a solid history against the Dodgers, pitching 11 shutout innings — including an eight-inning start — last season.
