Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported Monday that all current NFL players who participated in an arm wrestling competition in Las Vegas between April 5-9 will be fined by the league for violating the league’s gambling policy, including starting 49ers linebacker, NaVorro Bowman.
Bowman was one of over 30 current and former NFL players to participate in the event, which will air on CBS in late May. Other notable players in attendance were Pittsburg Steelers linebacker James Harrison, Oakland Raiders punter Marquette King, Miami Dolphins wide receiver Kenny Stills and former Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch.
Bowman addressed the incident on Monday:
“I’ve seen the articles and, you know, I was there. But I haven’t heard anything from the league so let’s hope nothing negative comes out of it but, if it does, I’ll take care of it.”
When asked about his thoughts regarding the league looking into the event, Bowman added:
“You know, I have my thoughts on it but, you know, I really don’t want to get into it. You know, I’m an employee of the NFL and it’s my job to, you know, follow the rules.”
Portions of prize money won in individual and team competitions at the event are expected to go to charities of the winning parties’ choice, and Bowman hope the league will take that into consideration:
“Hopefully they understand that it was for a great cause and hopefully they let this one go.”
Knowing the NFL however, chances are they won’t be “letting this one go,” as Bowman hopes. Instead, as the fine amounts have yet to be released, this could set a precedent for gambling violations in the future.
