A driver was killed late Thursday morning after his car struck a guardrail along the Dumbarton Bridge near Fremont, causing the vehicle to roll over several times, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash was first reported at 11:43 a.m. on westbound state Highway 84 west of the bridge’s toll plaza, CHP officials said.
Officers have concluded that the victim, who was driving a 2003 Hyundai, attempted to pass a semi truck. As the driver was passing the truck on the truck’s left side, the Hyundai veered toward the center divider wall.
The Hyndai then make a sharp turn to the right and crashed into a metal guardrail, causing the Hyundai to overturn several times until it came to rest on its roof along the highway, according to the CHP.
Medical personnel pronounced the male driver dead at the scene.
His identity has not been released.
Two lanes were closed as a result of the crash but reopened by 12:50 p.m.
The CHP is asking anyone with information about the fatal crash to contact Officer K. Shepardson at the (510) 489-1500.
